Selfishness, an Ideal

I have before been called selfish. And I can neither agree nor disagree to this, as I’m not sure that I understand their meaning. I do however see a type of selfishness in the world.

I have heard, “Republicans vote against their interest.” And if this is true, it must be because they have an ideal. They cast their vote for that ideal—and yes, even if it is not in their interest. But, after all, this must still benefit the voter—but surely it is deeper than any surface economics.

I am sure that no one on either side of the traditional political spectrum lacks an ideal. However, if you are only for your self-interest or the interest of others who you have sympathy for, then I would call that selfish.
